Normandy 2022. D-Day 6th June.

It has been a great adventure in Normandy 2022, and I hope everyone has enjoyed my posts. Today I travelled to Sainte-Mere-Eglise in the Utah American Sector. There is a party atmosphere here on D-Day with a huge public picnic at lunchtime. The town is supported by the US military who send current Airborne troops to act as ambassadors. They have a large re-enactment camp called Geronimo which is full of WWII military vehicles. The town has marching bands, aircraft flying overhead and an overall great feeling of celebration.

These US transport planes have been flying around Normandy all week.

Early evening, I travelled to Gold Beach in the British Sector and visited the British Normandy Memorial for a remembrance service. The Band of the Yorkshire Regiment and Jedburgh Pipers performed the music, and the last post was played. A selection of Normandy veterans were in attendance.

It was a great event and allowed us to bow our heads and give thanks for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, 78 years ago.

One of the veterans proceeding to read the Kohima during the last post. As you can see we had a bit of rain.

I have enjoyed sharing my blog and will sign off now until my next trip to the battlefields. I should be returning to WWI next month and then to Arnhem later in the year. I will confirm the dates when known and publish more posts when I get my boots on the ground.

Many thanks
